Female Vaginal Mesh Dangers Lead FDA to Caution Patients
Surgical vaginal mesh for pelvic organ prolapse repair is under intense scrutiny after numerous reports of serious injury caused by the deterioration of synthetic mesh. Numerous lawsuits have already been filed on behalf of patients injured by the defective vaginal mesh implants.

October 15, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The medical purpose of a vaginal mesh implant is to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP), urinary incontinence or other damaged tissue. Vaginal mesh is surgically implanted to assist women with complications from POP. It is meant to provide the pelvic and urinary tissue support needed to avoid severe POP symptoms.

Surgical vaginal mesh for POP repair, however, is under intense scrutiny after numerous reports of serious injury caused by the deterioration of synthetic vaginal mesh. The consequences of surgical mesh for urinary incontinence are still under review. The warnings are geared toward surgical transvaginal mesh implants for POP.

FDA Warns of Complications From Surgical Mesh Implants

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been investigating and evaluating vaginal mesh implants to determine their safety. The FDA has issued several statements warning women to avoid the dangerous and potentially defective medical device.

In a July 13 statement, the FDA wanted the public to understand that "Serious complications with surgical mesh for transvaginal support are NOT rare," meaning that women who undergo this procedure have an abnormally high rate of injury following the procedure.

These warnings stem from published scientific literature on the topic of vaginal mesh, in conjunction with reports of adverse events from women and medical professionals throughout the country. The FDA noted in recent statements that the benefits of surgical vaginal mesh may not outweigh the serious consequences that can occur after a permanent surgical mesh implant. Additionally, there are non-mesh options that may provide less risk with better results.

The Dangers of Surgical Transvaginal Mesh Implants

As early as 2005, the FDA received complaints from women with permanent injuries from surgical mesh implants. The number of reports of injuries, however, sharply increased from 2007 to 2010. There were five times as many complaint reports involving surgical vaginal mesh from 2008 to 2010 compared with 2005 to 2007.

Common problems with the use of vaginal mesh include:
- Bleeding
- Pain
- Infection
- Deteriorated vaginal tissue
- Pain during sex
- Loss of bladder control and other urinary problems
- Organ injury from tools used during surgery

Vaginal mesh companies have a responsibility to avoid dangerous and defective products. With the growing concern over surgical vaginal mesh dangers, there is pressure to recall the medical product, but that doesn't help women who have already been injured by it.

Contact a Medical Product Liability Lawyer

After injuries stemming from a surgical mesh procedure, you should immediately contact a local personal injury attorney who has experience handling medical product liability cases. Numerous lawsuits have already been filed on behalf of patients injured by the defective vaginal mesh implants. An experienced attorney will help you seek compensation for your injuries and medical bills.
