Physician Compliance Network Reaches Milestone Review
Company's Unique Program Assures Appropriateness of Cardiovascular Procedures at Hospitals Nationwide. Now over 2500 reviews performed.
LOS ANGELES, CA, November 09, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Physician Compliance Network (www.pcnmed.com) (PCN) announced today that they had completed their 2500th review of a cardiovascular procedure. Hospitals engage PCN to perform independent external audits of specified invasive procedures. PCN has developed a unique and proprietary system that examines and grades a small, but statistically accurate sampling of cases for medical necessity, and extrapolates the information for the hospital's medical peer review committee.
The system has been proven to lower the incidence of inappropriate procedures at hospitals that implement the PCN program.
A recent study from the National Cardiovascular Data Registry-ICD Registry found that 22.5% of patients that were given an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) were non-evidence-based, meaning they failed to meet medical criteria indicating use of an ICD.
The study called Non-Evidence-Based ICD Implantations in the United States appeared in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
"Clearly there is a lack of knowledge and a lack of awareness of the guidelines, and some patients were harmed," said Sana Al-Khatib, lead researcher from the Duke
Clinical Research Institute.
"While most hospitals and doctors have good intentions, there are procedures being performed on patients every day that are unnecessary, costly, and sometimes risky to the patient's health," stated Gregory D. Cohen, MD, MPH, FACC, the founder and CEO of Physician Compliance Network. "Our program helps hospitals and patients by uncovering doctors who are not following guidelines so that appropriate training or other actions can be taken. This has the net effect of increasing compliance, lowering risk, and improving quality of care for patients."
Physician Compliance Network developed the Appropriateness of Cardiovascular Care Program over 5 years ago, and it is now in use at forward-thinking hospitals nationwide.
